Used SUV Showdown: 2015 vs 2018 Chevy Equinox
You need a used SUV. Whether for space, utility, or safety features, a used SUV is a great option for many drivers. One of the most popular SUVs is the Chevy Equinox, which is available here at Car City. We have previously written about the Equinox in this blog, comparing it to the Ford Escape.
In this blog, however, we are comparing the Equinox against an older model of itself: 2018 vs 2015. The 2018 model underwent a full redesign, worthy of its own blog post. According to Cars.com, the Chevy Equinox currently has three distinct “generations”: 2005-2009, 2010-2017, and 2018-2021. Today, we compare the 2015 and 2018 to understand the differences so you can make the best decision possible when shopping for a used SUV.
Additionally, just because you have less-than-perfect credit doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a quality, used sedan. At Car City, we work with all credit types and can get people driving for only $39 down! We have a large inventory of newer used vehicles available in our locations from Cadillac, Michigan to South Bend, Indiana.
2015 Chevy Equinox
Part of the “second generation” of Equinoxes, the 2015 model saw the standardization of the Wi-Fi hot spot and offers drivers a comfortable ride with great safety and reliability ratings. According to U.S. News, it has one of the highest possible reliability ratings, a “punchy” V6 engine, and roomy seating. It gets 16-22 mpg in the city and 23-32 on the highway with a 182-301 horsepower engine.
The 2015 Equinox boasts a 9.3 overall safety rating, 5-star reliability rating, and scores an 8.9 (out of 10) in the reliability rating. It has an overall score of 8.2. The Equinox ranked #5 in U.S. News’s “2015 Affordable Compact SUVs” list.

2018 Chevy Equinox
Kicking off the “third-generation” of Chevy Equinoxes, the 2018 Equinox was completely redesigned with a sportier feel. The newer generation of Equinoxes features better cabin materials, increased fuel economy, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The new redesign is also child-seat friendly and is available in a wider range of four-cylinder engines.
With all this newer technology, the safety rating increased from the 2015 model to a 9.5, and it achieved an overall score of 8.1. It ranked #9 in U.S. News’s “2018 Affordable Compact SUVs” list. The 2018 Equinox gets 22-28 mpg in the city and 28-39 mpg on the highway with a 137-252 horsepower engine, making it more fuel-efficient than the previous generation.
